Reinvisioning

Hi Folks,

Here is a revision of a previous post I did for an old sketch. On the left is the original and on the right is a newer version of it. I still need to add some highlights and clean it up but all in all my Warrior Angel is done. My vision of this creature was a type of angel we haven't seen yet with animal-like paws or dare to think could exist. I didn't want to give it a demonic feel to it but something more courageous and powerful that adheres to similar themes I've been drawn to (no pun intended). The fact of the matter is would you what kind of angel would you want guarding your family....the one in the middle or the one on the far right?

Graduate School

I just got accepted to Graduate School today at Academy of Art University, San Francisco, CA. Its part of their online program which I'm not very fond of....online that is but as an educator there aren't many options for us. Only a few of us can do on-ground classes but it puts a strain on your entire life. Anyway, I'm extremely happy, elated and blessed to begin this new adventure. Thanks to the Lord that I'm finally on my way again to fulfill another dream! First my wife, daughter, our new home and now this! The Lord is Good is all I can really say right now!

I will continue to post here as much as possible especially when classes begin.

Here is a collection of sketches I put together for my graduate school submission portfolio. I forgot I had these in my stuff after we moved. The one on the left was a preliminary sketch for a larger charcoal drawing of a homeless man called "Creation Care" and the other two were 10 minute warm-up drawings for a performance art piece I did.

I haven't been able to work in my sketchbook lately and it pisses me off to no end. I told my students about this blog to keep me accountable but they have only mentioned it once in the past 2 months. This weekend I will post more drawings before the Finals Week.

Just a few sketches...only the good ones though. Most of these were done in a work related meeting of some sort. The guy on the far right...I have no idea who he is....I made him up but the guy next to him with the propeller is someone I used to work for.

The Wide and Narrow Roads

This is an illustration I did for the NewSong Church bulletin for the April 26th services. It illustrates the broad road on the left that the world that "leads to destruction and many enter...." On the right is the narrow road that "leads to live, and only a few find it" (Matthew 7:13). The concept was given to me but it's a decent one at that. The image came out pretty good, too.

I referred to posted signage you find in Edna Valley in San Luis Obispo showing a list of the wineries at each intersection.

Demo for Conceptual Storytelling: Winter 09

This was a demonstration I did for my Conceptual Storytelling class at Art Institute of California-Inland Empire. This was completed within 1 1/2 hours in charcoal and white pastel on toned paper.

At some point I'll update this blog. Our external HD is in the dump and we have yet to replace it so all of my applications are very slow including scanning and doing any Photoshop corrections. Anyway, most of my work as of late has been working in my sketchbook waiting for Debbie in her physical therapy appointments. One of the things I will be showing is a painting I've been working on for wife about a parent's wish. I will update with the preliminary thumbs and final pencils on them.

Graphic Novel?

One of my colleagues at Art Institute, Santosh, has been encouraging me to do a graphic novel. He said that next year, he and some friends are going to have their own table at the Comic-Con and that I should show my stuff off. I've been thinking that perhaps I will begin a graphic novel this year in preparation for next year...perhaps a short story. Most of my stuff involves some degree of storytelling so this may be the right avenue for me to venture into. I do have a painting I need to finish of my daughter for my wife. When I have a decent enough image of it I will load it up here.
